B READY FOR A GREAT 2019

As I reflect on 2018, I realize once again how fortunate I am. I have an incredible life filled with a wonderful family, joyful memories and good health. Of course, nothing is perfect and there have been several trials and tribulations, but I am grateful to have the will to overcome these situations. I am also thankful for the support from my husband, family, and friends.

I am so excited for 2019. I love fresh starts, new ideas, getting organized. In this post, I have included some of the things I am working on, have planned, and hope to achieve. I wish everyone a wonderful, joyful, healthy 2019.

Get Organized

I am always trying to be more organized. Whether it’s my closet, kitchen, or garage, purging and cleaning out always feels good. Five years ago, I read the book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo. To this day, I still love her philosophy and I use her techniques. Most recently, Kondo has come out with a series on Netflix, where she goes into a variety of people’s homes and helps them declutter.

Kondo’s services demand a huge waiting list in Japan. For those of us who are reading her book, she breaks down her two-part approach to tidying. First, put your hands on everything you own, ask yourself if it sparks joy, and if it doesn’t, thank it for its service and get rid of it. Second, once only your most joy-giving belongings remain, put every item in a place where it’s visible, accessible, and easy to grab and then put back.

Most would be surprised to see the number of clothing items that I actually have. I have become much more simplistic. Also, living at the beach, the lifestyle is much more casual, so the need for dressing up is not necessary.

How many of you have boxes and boxes of photos, old VHS tapes, and DVDs in your garage and or storage? I have a lot. One of my New Year’s resolutions is to take all of my photos and videos and get them digitized. As of now, I cannot watch any of my old family videos. I have researched where to take them, and in my opinion, Legacybox is the winner.

GET FIT

Every year, one of my resolutions is to keep exercising. I have been working out since I was a teenager. As I reflect back, I realize that every decade, my workouts have changed. In my teens, I was doing Nautilus training and treadmill running. In my 20’s I was doing step classes, aerobics, and weights. In my 30’s, kickboxing and Taebo. In my 40’s, spin classes, yoga, Orange theory, Zumba and hiking.

Now that I am 50, my workouts haven’t changed much, but my body has. I can’t do the hardcore training anymore—I get injured and endure a more intense soreness that is just not tolerable. I feel like I need to be kinder to my body and do things that make me feel happy. I love to dance and I can’t wait to go back to my Zumba class. Every city has a selection of Zumba classes available. You don’t need to be a good dancer to take a Zumba class, and the more you go, the better you will get at learning the routines. It is a great sweat and so much fun.

I love to be outdoors and especially love to hike. San Diego has some amazing hiking options. I often hike Torrey Pines and I also love to hike Potato Chip rock. Click the link for some of the great trails in San Diego!

This March, I am going to one of my favorite retreats: The Pearl Laguna. The Pearl is an intimate wellness retreat located in Laguna Beach. The Pearl was created by two world-renowned yogis, Geo, and Katresha (two of my favorite people).

The Pearl is located in Laguna Canyon. It is a twelve-bedroom, twelve-bath home, which offers single week and multi-week programs. The program combines a daily cleansing diet with three delicious meals, yoga, hiking, and meditation. The cuisine is all organic, vegetarian and is designed for cleansing and optimal health. At the Pearl, there is no alcohol, caffeine, processed food or refined sugars. I usually go with a friend or alone, never with my husband. They actually discourage you from going with a significant other because it is supposed to be only about you, you shouldn’t have to worry about anyone else. One cannot forget about the daily massage (that is needed) by the best of the best masseuses in Southern California. I cannot wait to go, and each time I am finished with the program, I feel so clean, strong, and healthy.

GET HEALTHY EATING HABITS

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to eat healthier… I try to live by the 80/20 rule. It is very simple, and in order to be healthy and balanced, you don’t always have to make 100% healthy food choices. 80% is enough. The remaining 20% you can choose less healthy food and indulge. I love this approach to healthy eating because it teaches balance, moderation and indulging without a guilty feeling. What I try to do is eat clean and healthy during the week and on the weekends, I eat whatever I want. If I have a special dinner or event during the week, I will go off track, I am not going to kill myself over food. I probably shouldn’t have had the dozen delicious chocolate chip cookies that my son made this holiday, but it’s the holidays, right? Food is one of life’s greatest pleasures. My main objective for my resolution is to try to eat healthier between meals, meaning fewer chips and crackers and more fruits and veggies. I do try to cook as healthy as possible.
